Environment and Community

Our Environment and Community Officers work with volunteers to:

  • help maintain a cleaner, safer, greener environment in York
  • create attractive neighbourhoods
  • create a real sense of community
  • improve health, wellbeing and inclusivity

We have many opportunities available for volunteers, including:

  • Litter picking - help improve the appearance of areas that may otherwise be neglected (see: Great British Spring Clean)
  • Gardening - help tend the city's green spaces
  • Snow Warden Scheme - helping keep residential pavements clear of snow and ice
  • Park locking and unlocking - volunteers help keep parks secure
  • Himalayan Balsam bashing - reducing this evasive non-native plant
  • Leaf clearing - keeping drains and paths clear of leaves

To help you get the most out of your volunteering experience, we'll provide you with:

  • health and safety training
  • appropriate equipment
  • ongoing support
  • insurance

For more volunteering opportunities, please contact York CVS or see the national volunteering database at
