Smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide alarm upgrades in council homes

We are investing in upgrading smoke, heat, and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms across council homes to meet the latest safety standards. These upgrades are part of our ongoing commitment to keeping you and your family safe and ensuring our properties meet the highest levels of safety and compliance.

We are installing interlinked alarms in key areas of your home. This means that if one alarm is triggered, all alarms will sound, giving you and your family faster warning in case of fire or carbon monoxide danger.

By allowing access for installation, you’re helping us make every council home in York safer, more secure, and better protected for everyone who lives there.

How installation works

We are working with trusted contractors to carry out these upgrades during scheduled visits. In many cases, we will combine this work with other safety checks such as electrical inspections to reduce disruption and make access easier. Installations should take less than an hour and should cause minimal disruption to your home. We will contact you in advance to arrange access to your home.

Where alarms will be installed

Most homes will receive alarms in:

  • kitchen
  • lounge
  • hallway
  • landing
  • carbon monoxide alarm - near the boiler or cooker

This setup ensures comprehensive coverage and provides early warning in the most important parts of your home.

Why this matters

It is important for us to make these improvements to your home to ensure your personal safety. For example:

  • smoke and heat alarms detect fires early, giving you more time to escape
  • carbon monoxide alarms protect against a silent, deadly gas from faulty boilers or other appliances
  • interlinked alarms offer whole-home protection for greater peace of mind
