Housing Benefit

Housing Benefit eligibility

You can make a claim for Housing Benefit if you can answer 'yes' to any of the following questions.

  • have you and your partner (if you have one) reached Pension Credit age? - If you're a couple and only one of you has reached pension age, then please contact us to check if you can claim Housing Benefit
  • do you live in supported exempt accommodation? - supported exempt accommodation is accommodation provided by a Housing Association or charity where the landlord, or someone acting on their behalf, provides you with care and support
  • do you live in temporary accommodation provided by City of York Council?

You may not be able to claim Housing Benefit if:

  • you live with and pay rent to a close relative
  • you're a full-time student
  • you have savings over £16,000
  • you're a 'person from abroad'

If you're liable for Council Tax but not eligible for Housing Benefit, then you can still claim Council Tax Support.

Housing Benefit does not cover mortgage repayments.

You may get help with mortgage repayments from the Pension Service or Jobcentre Plus if you claim:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Jobseekers' Allowance
  • Universal Credit

It's really important that you claim the right benefit. If you don't, you could miss out on money that you're entitled to and your claim could be delayed.
