50+ Activities

We have a number of sport and physical activity opportunities available for the Over 50s around the city, arranged as part of the council's Eng-AGE programme. Whether the activities take place at the local leisure facilities, at a community venue or in one of York's local parks or outdoor spaces, there's something for everyone.

Details about some of the forthcoming events organised by the our sport and active leisure team especially for for the over 50s Eng-AGE programme are below:

Pilates

Pilates classes take place at various locations across York.  Places are limited so please contact Catriona for details.

New Class - a new class is starting every Tuesday at 1pm to 2pm at York RI Sports Ground, New Lane, York, YO24 4NT

Tai Chi

Tai Chi classes take place at various locations as part of the Eng-AGE programme.  Tai Chi is perfect if you are over 50 as it is a low impact exercise which helps you improve your stability, posture and balance.  It helps you relax both the mind and body. 

  • Mondays 10.30am to 11.30am at St Oswalds Church Hall, Fulford
  • Thursdays 10.30am to 11.30am at Heworth Without Community Centre, Applecroft Road

Chair based exercise

Chair based exercise classes take place at Oaken Grove Community Centre on Tuesdays from 11am to 11.45am.

Zumba Gold

Zumba Gold brings latin fever to the over 50s. It is a fun, physical activity session for the older adult, modifying the moves of Zumba Fitness whilst keeping the fun party atmosphere!

  • Wednesdays 1pm to 1.45pm at Church of the Holy Redeemer, Boroughbridge Road
  • Thursdays 9.30am to 10.15am at Heworth Without Community Centre
  • Fridays 10.30am to 11.15am at Strensall Village Hall

Rusty Rackets

There are both tennis and badminton Rusty Rackets sessions for those over 50.

We've teamed up with Badminton England to offer  badminton sessions on Tuesdays at York Railway Institute from 10am to 11am (see the poster to the right of this page).
Each week a qualified instructor will be on hand to improve your game and you'll be able to enjoy some friendly competition whilst learning/improving skills.
