Rough sleeping in York

We aim to prevent homelessness and rough sleeping by offering early help and support.

Anyone sleeping rough in York will be offered a bed and support.

This includes support tailored to each person we work with. That includes any health issues, benefits and training. This aims to lead people into longer-term accommodation and work.

Carecent

For food, clothing, toiletries and shower facilities and support visit the Carecent breakfast club Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 10.45am at Central Methodist Church, St Saviourgate, York, YO1 8NQ.

Carecent can link you to other support such as:

  • housing services
  • sexual health clinic
  • Hep C Trust
  • NHS flu
  • covid vaccinations

Drop-in services around health and wellbeing including hairdressers and podiatrists are also available. On Thursday afternoons, between 1.00pm and 3.00pm, they provide hot drinks and snacks.

On the first Wednesday of every month, GamCare run a drop-in at Carecent from 1.00pm and 3.00pm, to support people with or who have family members with gambling addictions.

You can meet our Rough Sleeper Housing Navigators at Carecent on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Help with accomodation

If you do not have accommodation, are a single person or a couple, and are rough sleeping in York, you can attend a drop-in for advice on accommodation and support. Our drop-ins are at the Peasholme Centre, 4 Fishergate, York, YO10 4FH. They happen between 9.20am to 12.30pm, Monday to Friday. You'll be offered accommodation in a hostel or supported accommodation or be offered help to find private rented accommodation.

For help with accommodation, contact the Housing Options Team or telephone: 01904 554500.

For a bed and support out of rough sleeping, our Navigators can help. You’ll see them out and about in the city. You can also call or text them on telephone: 0751 116 1169 or email: housingrshnavigators@york.gov.uk.

You can ask any police or council officer for help to get a bed and support. They’ll usually offer that to anyone they see appearing to be sleeping rough.

You can also let us know that you need help online via StreetLink. This website lets you submit an alert for help so that we can locate you and give the support you need. This includes if you're sleeping outside, preparing to bed down, or sleeping somewhere like a car.
