Registering as an overseas elector
British or eligible Irish citizens living abroad, who have previously lived in the UK or been registered to vote in the UK can register to vote in UK parliamentary elections and potentially in referendums depending on the rules of an individual referendum (not local elections, nor Combined Authority Mayoral Elections).
To register as an overseas elector, you'll need to provide your name, date of birth and National Insurance number, which will be checked as part of your registration; your details must be in the Register of Electors archive in order to validate your application.
- You can register to vote if you previously lived in the UK but were not registered to vote.
- You can register to vote in the UK no matter how long ago you left or were last registered to vote.
Overseas elector declaration
Once registered as an overseas elector, you'll receive an 'overseas elector declaration'. Your declaration is valid for 3 years and must be renewed to remain valid, it lasts until 1 November in the third year after it takes effect.
