Works underway Saturday 19 January to Sunday 20 January

Significant delays expected this weekend during works at Walmgate Bar to upgrade traffic signals and pedestrian crossings, where we'll be operating 3-way traffic lights.

Walmgate will also be closed throughout the weekend.

We apologise in advance for disruption caused by these works.

From Sunday 6 January 2019, we will be refurbishing the junction of Walmgate/Barbican Road/Foss Islands Road/Lawrence Street (Walmgate Bar). These works will include:

  • replacing the outdated traffic signals with new, more reliable, ones
  • widening the islands to improve pedestrian crossing facilities
  • widening the cycle lane on Lawrence street
  • adding an early start signal for cyclists coming out of Walmgate Bar to provide them with priority coming out of town

The works are part of our Traffic Signal Renewal Programme (TSAR), which was approved in November 2015 and set out a plan to update many junctions across the city. This junction was last upgraded in 2002, and therefore has outdated traffic lights. We will be installing new equipment at the junction which is cheaper to run and more reliable. The work will be carried out by our in-house contractor, with sub-contractors brought in for specialist works.

To help minimise disruption and complete the works as quickly as possible, work will typically be carried out between 7.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Friday, and between 8.00am and 3.00pm at weekends. In order to safely install the duct crossings over the carriageway some evening works may be required - notification of these will be provided in advance. The works are expected to be fully completed by Friday 15 February 2019.

The left turn from Walmgate on to Foss Islands Road will be prohibited during the works and diversion routes will be in place. Walmgate will be closed on Sunday 6 January to allow for preliminary site works to be undertaken. Additional weekend closures on Walmgate will be in place on Saturday 12 to Sunday 13 January and Saturday 19 to Sunday 20 January, in order to allow the works on the approach to be undertaken safely.

Impact on traffic and pedestrians

It’s likely that the work will cause significant disruption to traffic. We’re aiming to keep this to a minimum by working in phases to allow the junction to function as well as possible. However, residents, businesses and visitors are advised to expect delays.

The junction will be operating under temporary signals during the works and motorists are expected to experience extensive delays while the works are underway. We will be managing the network to reduce delays but drivers are asked to plan their journeys carefully and leave plenty of time. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route to avoid the junctions, if possible.

Temporary crossing points will be available at all times during the works to ensure that all currently available pedestrian crossings are maintained. Traffic marshalls will be on site between 7.00am and 7.00pm everyday to assist pedestrians crossing the road.

It is anticipated that buses will continue to operate as normal during the works, however there will be delays when travelling through the junction. When Walmgate Bar is fully closed, buses will be on diversion; see the iTravelYork website for information regarding diverted routes.

Pedestrian routes and access to all businesses and properties will be retained throughout the duration of the works. If you have any issues, please speak to the staff on site so they can be resolved as soon as possible.
