Transport Technology Research and Investment Grants (T-TRIGs) have been provided annually since 2016 by the Department for Transport. These grants promote technologies and ideas which improve the transport network of the UK; either by increasing capacity, improving safety or by making journeys better.
T-TRIG funded projects
T-TRIG funding is targeted at scientific, engineering or technological innovations that address a known or expected challenge to the UK’s transport sector. Supported projects have solutions that:
- increase the prevalence of technology
- enhance innovation
- increase understanding of the UK’s transport network
July 2016 T-TRIG study – Better signals using co-operative ITS data
In January 2016, our Transport Systems Team were awarded £16.6k to examine how data from vehicles can be used to improve traffic signal performance using co-operative intelligence transport systems (C-ITS). The focus is both the longer-term potential benefits and critically the early stages of adoption by UK Local Authorities in a step by step evolutionary approach.

April 2018 T-TRIG study - Purgamentum Scheme
Building on the July 2016 study, in March 2018 the Department for Transport allocated £72k to a new scheme that will develop the pothole spotter project to monitor and identify our road sign stock; this will be achieved by adding sensors to refuse collection vehicles.
