The Smart Travel Evolution Programme (STEP) will monitor and enable analysis of real-time journey information to improve travel in York.
Rather than traditional traffic control, using roadside infrastructure, we'll apply technologies already in use in the UK to the whole city. Using co-operative ‘urban traffic control’, where vehicles and traffic signals work together to improve the network, we'll reduce congestion and emissions.
STEP will also generate a multi-layered, real-time model of traffic, public transport and air quality data, allowing York to prepare for connected and autonomous vehicles.
The STEP bid
In March 2018, the Transport Systems Team were awarded £2.85 million from the government’s National Productivity Investment Fund to proceed with STEP.
STEP will improve the connectivity and data collection of York’s transport technology assets in order to future-proof how the city deals with changing levels of demand. This scheme will see the control systems capture data, process it and react to conditions in real-time.
We've started to engage suppliers to help us trial these new technologies in York to change the way we manage traffic.
