Transport and emissions

Last mile logistics

We’ve been awarded £297,237 by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to carry out a feasibility study and subsequent pilot scheme to reduce emissions relating to deliveries travelling in to and out of York.

Our work will focus on:

  • reducing the number of deliveries and vehicles undertaking deliveries
  • identifying suitable sustainable alternatives for deliveries in to York (which may include a delivery ‘hub')
  • making the first or last mile of deliveries by an ultra-low emission vehicles, including eCargo bikes
  • lowering emissions from the remaining vehicles

The project's benefits could be realised further afield than the city centre. Depending on the final location of the pilot project it may also help to address light/heavy goods vehicle emissions to neighbouring districts, particularly Selby, which has an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) located 14 miles to the south of York.
