School admission appeals

If you've been refused a school place for your child, you can appeal for a school place.

Before appealing for a school place

Before deciding to appeal, you may prefer to speak to us to discuss your options, including your right of appeal, the type of appeal, and when appeals are held. We can send you appeal forms appropriate to the school and year group you are appealing for.

Request appeal papers

The appeal papers need to be completed and returned to appealsclerksadmin@york.gov.uk. The Appeal Clerks will then coordinate an independent appeal hearing and keep you updated on the process.

Before your school place appeal is held

You have the right to 10 days' notice before an appeal is held, and you'll have the opportunity to take part in the virtual appeal hearing should you wish to. If you do not have access to the virtual platform used, this will be discussed prior to the date of the appeal with the Appeal Clerks.

You'll also receive paperwork relevant to your child's case before your appeal hearing.

Appeals for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Children with a 'My Support Plan' and those on the SEN register may appeal using the procedure as above.

However, there is a different appeals process for pupils with an 'Education, Health and Care Plan' or a 'Statement of Special Educational Need' (previously called 'School Action' or 'School Action Plus') - contact SEN Services for further details.
