And they’re off ... Diggers line up to start work as community stadium project progresses

Diggers are on site and construction of the Community Stadium and leisure complex is now underway!

Once over the finish line, the new Community Stadium and leisure complex will feature an 8,000 all-seat community sports stadium hosting professional football and rugby league games. There will also be new leisure facilities with a swimming pool, gym, dance studio, indoor and outdoor climbing facilities and a sports hall with spectator seating.

A commercial development on the stadium site will include a cinema complex, with IMAX screen, five restaurants and up to three retail units.

NHS outpatient services will be offered on site from a community hub and there will be a new Explore library and a York Against Cancer retail unit.

The new stadium, leisure facilities and the community hub will all open in 2019 along with the new cinema and commercial units.

Councillor David Carr, Leader of City of York Council said:

“It is fantastic that construction workers are now on site delivering a Community Stadium and leisure complex for all our residents to enjoy.

“We have always been committed to delivering the Community Stadium and accompanying facilities which will be a great asset for the city.”

Councillor Ann Reid, interim executive member for leisure, culture and tourism said:

“It is great to see workers on site so soon after we announced that all the necessary agreements were in place. As well as providing top class community and leisure facilities for our residents, with new jobs and significant investment it will bring huge and long-lasting economic benefits to the city”

Contracts were signed last month to begin the build and operation of the new Community Stadium and leisure complex.  Buckingham Group Contracting Ltd are the building contractor and will be responsible for on-site safety.
