City of York Council is encouraging green fingered residents to pick up some free compost at Harewood Whin this autumn.

Alongside this residents can also take advantage of an online offer for their own compost bin.

Compost will be available for collection at Harewood Whin, Wetherby Road from 8.15am – 12 noon on:

24 September

8 October

22 October

Cllr Andrew Waller, deputy leader of City of York Council and executive member for the environment, said: “These compost giveaways are always very popular with residents. I am grateful that they have been brought back after all the building work that has taken place at Harewood Whin with the new waste transfer station."

Residents who want to collect some of the free compost must bring their own shovels and containers to take the compost home in. Only cars, pickups, vans & single axle trailers will be permitted. Larger vehicles and trailers will not be accepted.

People who want to compost their own waste at home can also take advantage of a buy one get one half price special offer currently on compost bins that the council are running in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council.

There are two sizes of bins available to purchase at subsidised prices:

  • 220 litre compost bin £8 + delivery
  • 330 litre compost bin £10 + delivery

Delivery is £5.99 per order.
