Shared ownership homes offered to eligible key workers

Eligible key workers are being invited to put in the first bids for new shared ownership homes on Lowfield Green.

The shared ownership homes on Lowfield Green are the part of the next phase of exceptional homes from the council’s Shape Homes York brand.

The eight homes can be reserved by key workers who meet the Government criteria and who are eligible for the Help To Buy scheme.

Any key worker who lives and/or works in York, who has a combined household income of £80,000 or less, who can’t afford to buy a home on the open market and meets the eligibility criteria, can apply.

The homes available for key workers to apply to buy are six three-bed semi-detached properties of slightly differing sizes. They range in price from £250,000 to £285,000 for 100% ownership – from £112,500 to £128,250 for a 45% share. There are also three apartments: one has one bedroom and two have two bedrooms and they range from £145,000 to £175,000 for 100% ownership - £65,250 to £78,750 for a 45% share.

Applicants can buy between 25-75% of the home, with the option of buying more shares as and when they can afford to. Rent is paid to the landlord on the proportion of the house they don’t own.

With generous space, abundant private and public outside space, plus high environmental values, these homes are part of the 600 homes being delivered through the Housing Delivery Programme.

Cllr Denise Craghill, Executive Member for Housing and Safer Neighbourhoods, said:

Our key workers have helped protect the most vulnerable in the city and kept us safe during the pandemic. Many earn lower than average wages, working long hours and contending with the worry of protecting their own loved ones.

“Putting them first in this scheme is the right thing to do. It’s one way in which we can say thank you and give eight households an affordable start in their own home and help them onto the property ladder.”

Applications for shared ownership of these eight homes are invited before 17 May 2021. Any key worker who believes they might be eligible, can find out more about Lowfield Green or can email for more information about shared ownership in this development.
