Alphabet coffee bar - ward grant report 2016-17

Alphabet Coffee Bar within the Acomb Baptist Church on Ridgeway received a ward grant from Westfield Ward in 2016-17 towards a summer trip to Eden Camp.

The applicant reported as follows:

''Alphabet Coffee Bar provides a weekly meeting place for local people in the Chapelfields area. Although open to all age groups it is mainly attended by the over 60s, many of whom are living alone with health issues.

The grant was used to pay for coach transport to and from Eden Camp and a picnic lunch for the seniors group, ranging from 60 years to 91 years old, including 9 wheelchair users. A total of 33 people made the trip which provided a day out with company and a diversion from the normal everyday routine, an excellent opportunity for general discussion and reminiscing for those who experienced the Second World War.

A day out such as this gives older people, particularly those living on their own, something to look forward to and also to talk about afterwards.
For those with short term memory loss it provides an opportunity to take part in discussions on events that they can still recall and have some knowledge of.''
