Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that spreads via close contact between people. Monkeypox is usually mild and self-limiting, and most people recover from illness within a few weeks.
If you think you have monkeypox symptoms:
- contact NHS 111 or contact a local sexual health clinic immediately*
- avoid close personal or sexual contact with others until you know that this is not monkeypox
*Please contact clinics ahead of your visit; your call or discussion will be treated sensitively and confidentially.
Monkeypox in the UK
The risk of monkeypox to the UK population is low. However, there are currently a number of cases of monkeypox in the UK and that number is rising.
Recent UK cases are predominantly in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. As monkeypox spreads through close contact, these groups are being advised to be alert to any unusual rashes or lesions on any part of their body, especially their genitalia, and to contact a local sexual health clinic if they have concerns.
