The York area was home to a number of second world war airfields in which Memorials are situated.
Groupes Lourdes (Heavy Groups)
A memorial to the aircrew of the French squadrons who flew out of RAF Elvington in the second world war and lost their lives is located at Elvington Airfield, York Road, Elvington, York, YO1 4DY. It is owned and maintained by Yorkshire Air Museum and sited on land owned by Elvington Parish Council.
Clifton Moorgate
At the junction of Clifton Moorgate and Kettlestring Lane a memorial marks the site of York Aerodrome. It is dedicated to the memory of RAF and Handley Page personnel and original members of Yorkshire Aviation Services who operated the Airfield between 1936 and 1939.
Rufforth
As part of a millennium project Rufforth Parish Garden was redesigned to represent the runways on Rufforth Airfield. A memorial was placed in the garden to those who were based at Rufforth Airfield during the war. Rufforth with Knapton Parish Council website gives lots more information about the village.
