Your COVID-19 test results
You'll receive your result within a few hours of taking a rapid coronavirus test, by text or email, from the NHS.
If you don’t have a smart phone, or access to a mobile phone or email account, you’ll be asked to call 119 for your results.
Negative test results
If you receive a negative test result you can continue as you were.
- a negative test result provides information about the level of the virus at one point in time
- there's the potential for the test result to be 'false negative' if you're infected with COVID-19 but don't yet have a high enough level of the virus to register on the Lateral Flow Device
- it's possible to become infected in the hours or days after taking a rapid test - so you must continue to follow government guidance on social distancing, good hand hygiene, and practice 'Hands, Face, Space, Fresh Air'
- this type of testing will only be effective if people continue to follow the guidance
Positive test results
If you receive a positive test result you must self-isolate for up to 10 days.
You can now leave isolation after negative lateral flow tests on days 5 and 6, or after two negative tests on consecutive days after day 5.
If you get a positive result on your first test you should not go for a second rapid results test - cancel your second test appointment by following the cancellation link in your booking confirmation email.
Invalid test results
If you receive an invalid test result it means your test sample could not be read; arrange another test as soon as possible.
