Data collections

We are responsible for completing a number of statutory data collections from schools for the Department for Education (DfE). The Management Information Service (provided by the Business Intelligence Hub) aims to make this process as clear and straight forward as possible for school staff.

Statutory data collections from schools include the following:

School Census (including Post 16 census)

The DfE publishes guidance for the school census. We collect information about individual pupils and information about the schools themselves.

Examples of individual pupil information collected include:

  • free school meal eligibility
  • special educational needs (SEN)
  • attendance
  • exclusions
  • planned learning hours

End of Key Stage collections

We collect and report results for all children at the end of Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as well as data from the Phonics Screening Check.

Statutory guidance for local authorities for each data collection is published by the DfE.

We also provide bespoke data collections from schools and act as a gate keeper to prevent unnecessary duplication of information requests. For more information about data collections please contact the School Management Information Service.
