Support for visually impaired pupils

The Visual Impairment Support Team provides specialist support for children with reduced vision whose sight cannot be corrected solely by the wearing of glasses.

We offer support to children, their families and schools by liaising closely with colleagues in schools and other agencies. Our aim is to enable children to take part as fully as possible in the life of their school.

Our work is done in liaison with parents because they have so much information to share about their child, including what the child can or cannot do. Problems are often solved by asking parents what happens at home.

We work with parents, health staff and specialist agencies to support the school in making provision for the pupil.

We offer training and advice to educational settings, including early years and out-of-school providers, to help children with reduced vision have the same opportunities as others.

The level of support we provide

Our work is very varied: some children only require 1 or 2 visits while others need extensive cross-agency working.

The level of our involvement varies considerably according to the child's needs and their degree of vision loss. This could include the provision of specialist equipment and or modified materials.
