We adopted Dylan when he was 15 months old, he's now 2 and
We always knew we wanted to have a family and discussed adopting before we started to try for one. We weren't able to have a children as it turned out and once we reached the right stage in accepting that, we immediately knew adoption was the right path for us.
It took around 6 months for us to be approved and although the process can be perceived as intrusive, we never felt this. We enjoyed our sessions with our social worker and found the time to research and think about how we would parent together really valuable.
A week after we went to panel, we saw Dylan's profile for the first
time. We were surprised to receive a profile so quickly and couldn't believe we
could find such a perfect match. Waiting to hear if the match was supported was
probably the toughest part of the entire process and we were thrilled when the
social workers confirmed they felt we were a good match.
We were supported from start to finish by York City Council and know we can always ask questions and attend drop-ins for additional support as and when we need to.
We've been a family for over a year now and haven't looked back. It took time for us all to settle in and adjust to our new life, which is the same for any new parent. It's been an amazing and positive experience and we can't promote it to people enough.
We've made lots of new friends and our support network has widened as a result. We think York City Council have an excellent adoption team and we're looking forward to our next adoption with them when we're ready to expand our family.
