Adoption stage 1

Stage 1 of the adoption approval process begins when we accept your registration of interest; this stage should take no longer than 2 months.

During stage 1 we will complete an agreement with you (known as a 'Stage 1 Plan') which sets out both our responsibilities.

Within stage 1:

  • we will undertake police and health checks
  • you will name three referees, two of whom cannot be related to you
  • we will interview referees and include interview reports in your Prospective Adopter’s Report (PAR)
  • together we'll explore the preparation most appropriate for you

We will let you know at the end of stage 1 if you may be suitable to adopt and whether you can proceed to a full assessment in stage 2.

You will need to let us know within 6 months of this decision, whether you wish to proceed to stage 2. You can take a break of up to 6 months between Stage 1 and 2, if you so wish.

Find out what happens next, in stage 2.
