You can apply online for a Minster Badge if you live in York.
A Minster Badge gives residents parking discounts during the day and free parking after a certain time, in most of our car parks and on-street pay and display bays after 6pm.
If you have already renewed your Minster Badge and have not received your replacement, please allow 10 working days from the date of renewal for your new minster badge to be received.
Apply for a Minster Badge
A Minster Badge costs £20 and lasts 2 years. You will need to supply:
- your address
- vehicle details
- payment details
Your application will take on average 10 working days to process and your badge will be sent to you by post.
If you own more than one vehicle you can apply for a badge for each vehicle.
Renewing your Minster Badge
If you wish to renew your current Minster badge, please apply online and select Minster Badge renewal from the drop down menu. You must ensure that you have your current Minster Badge number available to you as this needs to be provided, alongside your vehicle registration details
Park using a Minster Badge
The discount badge allows residents to park at a reduced rate in council car parks during the day, and to FREE evening parking.
The free parking period for Minster badge holders starts from:
- 6pm until midnight, Sunday to Thursday
- 5pm in selected car parks, until midnight Friday and Saturday
The 5pm start to free parking on Fridays and Saturdays is applicable in Marygate, Nunnery Lane, St Georges Field, Monkbar, and Union Terrace only.
The Minster badge also allows free parking in on-street 'pay and display' bays after 6pm.
To qualify for discounts you must display your badge clearly in your windscreen.
As a York resident you are still entitled to a Minster Badge if you drive a company vehicle - simply provide the registration number of the vehicle that you're permitted to use.
Changes to your details or vehicle details
Badges are only valid when used on the vehicle that they are registered to. If you change your vehicle you will need to return your badge so a replacement can be issued. Please include a letter explaining why you're returning a badge and give details of the new vehicle you want to register.
Lost or damaged badges
If your vehicle is involved in an accident in which the badge is irretrievable, a replacement badge will be issued free of charge upon the receipt of a police incident number. In all other circumstances (including when your permit is lost) a replacement badge will cost £20.
We have changed our Minster Badge scheme. All old badges (issued before 1 September 2013) are invalid and users will no longer be entitled to the discounts it provides.
If you display an old badge (which does not include the vehicle registration number) and have not paid relevant parking charges a parking fine or 'penalty charge notice' (PCN) may be issued.
