YorHome property letting agency rents out privately-owned properties to provide much-needed homes.
YorHome is a non-profit making agency, run by City of York Council. All our tenants are referred to us by our Housing Options Team or Refugee Resettlement Team.
We don’t charge our YorHome tenants upfront costs: just affordable rents.
During a tenancy, they are required to meet:
Tenant responsibilities
All YorHome tenants must fulfil certain responsibilities, depending on the type of tenancy you have.
Your responsibilities include:
- providing documents so we can check that you have the right to rent a home
- paying your rent on time
- looking after your home
- asking permission to take in a lodger or make improvements to your home
- taking responsibility for all behaviour in your home. This includes the behaviour of you, members of your household or visitors to your home, towards neighbours, your landlord or letting agency staff
- keeping to the rules of your tenancy as laid out in your tenancy agreement – this includes rules about pet ownership or smoking
- ending your tenancy according to the agreement - you may be charged if not.

If you have a licence rather than a tenancy, you may not have all these rights. Get advice if you're not sure whether you're a tenant or a licensee.
Responsibility for repairs
Tenants are responsible for:
- keeping the property clean
- caring for the property ensuring it is not damaged by anyone living in or visiting it
- carrying out minor maintenance, such as replacing smoke alarm batteries
- carrying out minor repairs relating to internal decorations, gardens and furniture
- using the heating system correctly
- not blocking flues or ventilation.
Emergency out of hours repairs
If you have an emergency and your home needs an urgent repair, we can organise this and will charge you for it.

Please note this is not a free service. All calls to the out-of-hours service will be recorded for training purposes.
Difficulty paying YorHome rent
As soon as you have any concerns about paying your rent, contact us as soon as possible.
You risk losing your home if your rent payments are not received by your landlord.
