Volunteer case study: snow wardens

Planned maintenance to payments system

We're making essential updates to our payments system from 1pm on Thurs 19 October to midday on Fri 20 October. We apologise that we won't be able to take online or telephone payments during this time

Although the last two winter seasons were mild the volunteer snow warden initiative has been growing in the city.

There are currently 211 volunteers who help out with clearing snow and sprinkling grit on pavements across York.

In Bishophill and Dunnington volunteers coordinate their efforts and operate as a group.

‘I signed up to volunteer as a snow warden with the intention of keeping the sloping paths of Bishophill clear as in the previous year, some elderly residents had found the paths outside their homes hazardous for weeks on end.’ – Colin, of Bishophill
