Mary Weastell, Chief Executive, City of York Council
Mary joined City of York Council in August 2016. Prior to this she was Chief Executive at Selby District Council and Assistant Chief Executive at North Yorkshire County Council. This dual role was at the forefront of service innovation and partnership working. This collaborative arrangement between Selby Council and North Yorkshire County Council was focused on building a strong partnership between two tiers of local government and taking forward integrated service delivery, driving efficiencies and better use of resources for both organisations at a strategic and local level. Key to the role was working with communities and residents to continue to build resilient and confident local communities for the future.
Mary is a Lawyer by profession and has worked in the public sector for many years at Unitary, District and County Authorities in the North East, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire, managing a broad range of front line and corporate services including strategy/policy, legal, HR, performance improvement, business services, strategic commissioning, community services, libraries, archives, registrars, community safety, community engagement and customer services.
Mary has a number of external roles including:
- Sub Regional Chief Executive representative on the North Yorkshire, York and East Riding Housing Board.
- Governor of Selby College
- Director of Selby College Multi Academy Trust
- Princes Trust Ambassador for the Northern Region
