Mary Weastell became our Chief Executive in August 2016; she has lead responsibility for the strategic direction and operations of City of York Council, ensuring we provide excellent quality services for the communities and residents of York.
Mary's Chief Executive regional roles include:

In partnership with key stakeholders, Mary works to deliver an excellent quality of service for the communities and residents of York so that everyone can reach their full potential.
Mary supports our councillors to deliver their key priorities for the city, ensuring that the whole of York realises its ambitions and continues to be a great place to live, enjoy life, study and work.
Mary has a number of external roles including being the Sub Regional Chief Executive representative on the North Yorkshire, York and East Riding Housing Board.
Mary was previously Chief Executive at Selby District Council and Assistant Chief Executive at North Yorkshire County Council, working with the community and residents to build resilient and confident local communities for the future.
The dual role with Selby District Council and North Yorkshire County Council was at the forefront of service innovation and partnership working, focused on:
- building a strong working relationship between two tiers of local government
- better use of resources for both organisations at a strategic and local level
- taking forward integrated service delivery
- improved efficiency
Mary is a Lawyer by profession and has also previously held many senior leadership roles in the public sector at Unitary, District and County Authorities in the North East, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.
Mary is a keen sports person and is a member of York’s rowing club ladies team. She is a dedicated cyclist completing a number of long distance charity bike rides.
