Council tax exemption for properties left empty by patients in care

Council tax exemptions for properties left empty by patients in care

Apply for a council tax exemption for a property left empty by patients in hospitals and care homes if you're receiving a high level of care in a:

  • residential care home
  • nursing home
  • hospital
  • hostel

This exemption applies when an owner or tenant has left their property unoccupied, as they have moved to live permanently at a residential care home. The exemption will end if the property is occupied by another person but will apply again when that person leaves, as long as the owner or tenant is still resident in the care home and it has remained their main place of residence since leaving.

Apply for a council tax exemption for a property left empty by persons receiving care if you're receiving care in:

  • the home of a friend
  • the home of a relative
  • another residential address

You'll only be exempt from paying council tax if there is no intention for you to return to your property; no discounts are available during temporary respite care, if you're returning to your property.

Please send your completed form to The Council Tax Revenues Team.
