Re-registering a birth

You may need to re-register a birth if:

  • the child's parents have married each other, or formed a civil partnership since the birth was registered
  • only the mother's details were recorded in the register, but now both parents want their details included

Applying to re-register a birth

Forms to re-register a birth are available from York Register Office, or any other register office in England and Wales.

There is no charge to re-register a birth.
