Hull Road Crossing improvements near Lilac Avenue

From Monday 6 July 2020, we will be improving the crossing on Hull Road near Lilac Avenue. We expect the works to take 4 weeks to complete.

These works will include:

  • replacing the outdated traffic signals with new ones
  • resurfacing the footway
  • adding red and green / cyclist crossing symbols

The works are part of our Traffic Signal Asset Renewal (TSAR) Programme, which was approved in November 2015 and set out a plan to update many junctions across the city. This junction was last upgraded in 2002, and has outdated traffic lights. We'll be installing new equipment at the junction which is cheaper to run and more reliable. The work will be carried out by our in-house contractor, with sub-contractors brought in for specialist works.

To help minimise disruption and complete the works as quickly as possible, work will typically be carried out between 9.00am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday, and between 8.00am and 4.00pm at weekends. In order to safely install the duct crossings over the carriageway, some evening works may be required, however, we'll provide notification of these in advance.

We are also planning to close Lilac Avenue at the junction of Hull Road from Monday 6 July to Friday 24 July to allow the works in this area to be undertaken.

Impact on traffic and pedestrians

It’s likely that the work will cause disruption to traffic. We’re aiming to keep this to a minimum, however we encourage residents, businesses and visitors to plan their journey and allow plenty of time. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route to avoid the junction, if possible.

The works will be operating under temporary signals during the roadworks and motorists are expected to experience delays while the works are underway.

Temporary crossing points will be available at all times during the works to ensure that all currently available pedestrian crossings are maintained.

Pedestrian routes and access to all businesses and properties will be retained throughout the duration of the works. If you have any issues, please speak to the staff on site so they can be resolved as soon as possible.
