SGF1 – St George’s Field and Coach Park site

Although prone to flooding, the area provides much needed coach and car parking facilities. St George's Field could remain as it is, with some improved public space, or potentially provide extra parking spaces if they are lost in other places in the Castle Gateway.

SGF1 Idea A - remain as a surface-level car and coach park

Leave the car and coach parking as they are, with improved public realm.

SGF1 Idea B - new multi-storey car and coach park with visitor arrival point

Create a new decked or multi storey car park, alongside a visitor coach park and information centre. The car park could also have a viewing platform. The ground floor of the car park would be allowed to flood, with the vehicle and pedestrian entrance and exit at higher levels. This idea would allow the Castle Mills site to be used for apartments instead of car parking.

St George’s Field is both an arrival point for visitors and a key route into the city centre for pedestrians and cyclists coming from the south. Ideas to enhance the experience of pedestrians and cyclists include:

  • T15 - Integrating car and coach parking into a parkland setting
  • T16 - Providing better crossings of the ring road (Tower Street)
  • T17 - Screening of existing sewage pumping station and any new car park structure with green ‘living’ walls
  • T18 - Commemorating the site of the Knights Templar chapel with a public realm feature
  • T19 - Providing a viewing platform at the confluence of the Ouse and the Foss and also within any new car park, giving views of the southern gateway.
