Exercise and coronavirus
Exercising regularly is one of the best things you can do for your health, it is a great way to boost both your mental and physical wellbeing, and now is the ideal time to try a new activity.
Live Well York have published some ideas on how you can stay physically active during the coronavirus lockdown.
Leisure centres and swimming pools have been closed until further notice. See better.org.uk for information about memberships.
Following government advice libraries in York are currently closed. See details of online services and resources available from York Explore, including details of new services and ideas to keep you inspired, such as:
- a virtual book group
- 5,000 Ebooks and audio books free for adults and children
- a York Images website of photographs, illustrations, maps and archival documents
- free use of 'Ancestry' and 'Find My Past' (library editions) to start your family tree
We’re also considering how council services which currently run from Explore’s Library Learning Centres can be delivered differently; we’ll keep you informed about how we're adapting services, as soon as possible.
Library loans, deliveries and collections
A service to safely deliver and collect books for those who can’t access the internet is being scaled up during the UK coronavirus outbreak.
If you have library items on loan, you don’t have to return them until 30 June; you won’t be fined.
In line with government guidance, we have cancelled all current nordic walking sessions.
Parks and open spaces
All council-run parks in the city will remain open for exercise, but we’re asking visitors to ensure they adhere to social distance best practice.
Play areas and playgrounds
Council play grounds and play areas will be closed until further notice.
York Health Walks
In line with government guidance, we have cancelled York Health Walks (YHW) for the short term.
Any current YHW programmes (January to July 2020) will not be valid. The next programme will be published on the walking for health page as soon as one is available.
