York has one of the largest pedestrian zones in Europe. The pedestrian streets, or footstreets - create a safer and more attractive city centre for everyone, whether residents, businesses, shoppers or visitors.

Pedestrian area times

During these times the zone is strictly for pedestrians. Vehicles should not enter this area, apart from a few exceptions, such as emergency vehicles.

Blake Street, Castlegate, Church Street, Colliergate, Coney Street, Feasegate, High Petergate, Lendal, Little Stonegate, Low Petergate, Market Street, Ousegate, Parliament Street, Swinegate:

Monday to Friday 11.00am - 4.00pm
Saturday 10.30am - 4.30pm
Sunday 12.00noon - 4.00pm

The Shambles:

10.30am - 4.00pm

Stonegate:

10.30am until 5.00am the following morning.

Deangate/ Minster Yard:

Motorised vehicles are not allowed to pass through Minster Yard. It is closed to traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cycling is permitted along this route.

Rising bollards

Rising bollards limit access to certain roads for vehicles but pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles have access at all times.

Cycling

Cycling is not permitted in any part of the pedestrian zone during the pedestrian hours.

Parking for people with disabilities

People with a blue badge parking permit may park on certain city centre streets. The city centre disabled access guide has a map of where you can park with your blue badge.

There is also additional parking available for people with severe disabilities. To find out if you are eligible for this scheme see green badge parking scheme.

If you operate community buses or similar vehicles taking pre-arranged groups of people with disabilities into the city, you can get a permit for entry into Davygate, St Sampson's Square and Church Street.
