Town twinning

50 years York and Münster 1957 to 2007

The city of York is proud to be twinned with Dijon in the Burgundy region of France and Münster in the North Rhine Westphalia region of Germany.

Dijon and Münster have much in common with York. They are old cities with a historic townscape and are rich in tradition.

The partnership with Dijon was formed in 1953 the partnership with Münster was formed in 1957.

York-Münster - 50th Anniversary

Münster is celebrating the 50th anniversary of their twinning with York this year.  A series of events have marked this special anniversary.

In March 2007, the Oberbürgermeister from Münster visited York to join in celebrations in the Guildhall to mark the occasion, and the Lord Mayor hosted a weekend of activities.

In June the Lord Mayor of York returned the visit, enjoying a weekend in Münster to again celebrate the anniversary.  The visit coincided with the opening of the 4th International Sculpture Project in Münster.

In August 2007, the Guildhall will host the YoMü - the York-Münster Visual Arts Festival.  From the 3 to 10 August, artists from York and Münster will work together, developing and showcasing professional art practise.  The Guildhall will be open 11am to 4pm throughout the festival.
