City Of York Council

CCTV

Our CCTV system consists of 78 cameras positioned at various locations around the city. They serve the dual purpose of assisting traffic management and promoting community safety. A full list of camera locations is downloadable from this page.

All cameras are linked to a recording system where the footage is kept for 31 days after which it is automatically deleted. The cameras provide a high quality colour image and most have pan-tilt-zoom functionality - those without this facility are fixed cameras targeting a specific area of interest, such as a set of bicycle racks.

All cameras are linked to two monitoring rooms that provide live coverage and control over the entire system.

The primary control room is located within Fulford Road Police Station and manned by council operators. These operators have radio links with police officers on the ground, parking attendants, store detectives and public house door staff.

The traffic control room within the council headquarters is regularly manned during peak hours and during large organised events such as horse racing meetings.

Some cameras also provide a reduced quality, semi-live image to the York travel website at www.yorklive.info to show traffic conditions to the public.

Details of the objectives and operating procedures of the system are outlined in the Code of Practice which is downloadable from this page.
