City Of York Council

School crossing patrols

The council provides school crossing patrols. We are not required to by law (under the Road Traffic Act 1984) but we so do as a matter of safety.

Even where a school crossing is provided, parents and carers retain the responsibility to ensure their children's safety on the journey to and from school. We are not responsible for any child whose parents have failed to collect them at the end of the school day.

The School Crossing Patrol service is committed to providing a dedicated team of school crossing patrols to safely escort school children across our manned school crossings throughout York.

Joining the team

If you can spare up to 10 hours per week during school term time, enjoy being outside in all weathers and helping your local community, then why not apply to be a School Crossing Patrol?  Full uniform and training is provided.

Applicants must be:

  • in good health and able to work in all weather conditions.

Alternatively, you can apply to be a school crossing relief to cover the duties of an existing school crossing patrol if they are not able to work for any reason.
