New fines for environmental crimes

We are reminding residents and visitors that they could be fined for committing a range of environmental crimes. From 20 November 2006 a wider range of fines were introduced:

  • An increase to the littering fine to £75 reduced to £50 if payment is made within 10 days.
  • £100 for not putting household waste out for collection at the correct time and in the correct way, reduced to £60 if payment is made within 10 days.
  • £75 for graffiti and fly-posting, reduced to £50 if paid within 10 days.
  • £300 for companies failing to produce the necessary waste transportation documents, reduced to £180 if paid within 10 days.

This is part of the council's York Neighbourhood Pride initiative to improve the local environment and show real improvements to the street cleanliness.

    Anyone wanting to report anti-social behaviour can do so by calling the York Pride Action Line
  • Drains and sewerage
    Includes information about drain clearing
  • Flyposting
    Flyposting is the unauthorised display of an advertisement. We can serve notice on those displaying or causing a flyposter to be displayed to remove it within 48 hours
  • Flytipping
    If you see someone flytipping contact us with the exact details of where it occurred, what you saw and the vehicle registration
  • Graffiti
    Let us know about graffiti so we can investigate the issue and keep you up to date with progress of its removal
  • Household rubbish collections
    Find out when collections are in your area, report refuse put out early online and request a new bin online
  • Litter
    Report litter on pavements, overflowing bins, dumped rubbish or any other litter problems
  • Neighbourhood Pride Services Customer Standards
    York is a fantastic place to live, work and visit. We all benefit from the superb environment both in the city and in neighbourhood areas. However similar to most councils within the UK we do suffer from relatively small amounts on environmental crime, which can impact negatively on the 'liveability' of our areas.

    In a bid to clean up the city before the summer season, our Neighbourhood Pride service will be undertaking additional cleaning during May. The Spring Clean campaign will run from 6 to 30 May 2008.
  • Street cleaning programme
    The cleansing of council owned or adopted streets, car parks, gullies and other land by mechanical or manual methods
  • Street Environment Officers
    Your officer will be able to help you with a range of issues
