Litter

Contact us to report litter on pavements, overflowing bins, dumped rubbish or any other litter problems. We will work to remove litter as quickly as possible. Action will be taken against people who deliberately cause litter on our streets. As part of York Pride we encourage everyone to be responsible when disposing of their litter.

Report litter online

Go straight to street litter online form

You can report problems with street litter using our online form. Please give as much information as possible to enable street cleaning crews to find the litter easily.

Litter crews work 7.30am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday, and will deal with urgent (i.e. dangerous) litter within 2 working hours of a report being received (litter reported after 3.00pm will be dealt with the following day).  Examples of dangerous litter are needles, broken glass, oil and paint. Other litter will be cleared within 3 working days of it being reported.

You will be asked to give details of the service you require, and your own personal details. You will receive an email acknowledgement, and the litter will be cleared within the relevant time period (see above).

You can also report litter problems by ringing York pride Action Line.

£50 fixed fine

If you are seen dropping litter in York we can fine you £75 (reduced to £50 if payment is made within 10 days). Food packaging, cigarette butts and chewing gum all count as litter.

Litter is unsightly. It can present environmental hazards and can lead to other types of antisocial behaviour and crime.

You will need to pay the fine within 14 days or you risk going to court where you could be fined up to £2,500. Any money raised through fines will be used for further work against littering offences

If you know of 'hot-spot' areas people often drop litter you can report these on the York Pride Action line.

Needles

If you see syringes or needles contact us on the York Pride Action line. We will arrange for their removal as a priority. Removal will occur within two hours of notification to the contractor.
