Flytipping and dumping

Fly tipping is the illegal dumping of waste.

Report flytipping online

Go straight to flytipping online form

You can report problems with flytipping using our online form. Give as much information as possible to enable street cleansing crews to find the flytipping easily.  Crews work 7.30am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday. Flytipping will be cleared within 2 working days of it being reported.

You will be asked to give details of the flytipping and your own personal details. You will receive an email acknowledgement, and the flytipping will be cleared within the relevant time period (see above).

You can also report flytipping by contacting the York Customer Centre with the exact details of where it occurred, what you saw and the vehicle registration. Your details will remain confidential.

What are we doing to combat fly tipping?

Street environment and enforcement officers carry out business visits to ensure commercial waste is being disposed of correctly.

Environmental enforcement officers work with the Environment Agency to ensure all carriers of waste are registered.

We have a rolling programme of education and monitoring of back lanes across the city, to ensure household waste is not fly tipped as part of the weekly collection refuse.

Where possible we use surveillance equipment to monitor know problem areas. Where appropriate we will investigate fly tipping offences to take enforcement action against those responsible. A successful prosecution can result in a fine at a magistrates court of up to £50,000 and / or six months imprisonment.

We routinely visit known hotspots to ensure prompt removal.
