City Of York Council

Transport and Streets Section

Speed Limits

You can ask the council to change or introduce a speed limit on a road or area.

Speed limits are enforced by the police.  Because of this we would ask the Police if they would support the change before consulting with other bodies or the people that live in that area or road.

Cost

There is no cost to you to ask us to investigate the possibility of introducing a speed limit or changing the speed limit in your area.

Are there any rules?

In order to support your request we need to be satisfied that:

  • there is a substantial problem
  • it is in line with the Department for Transport speed limit guidance and the council's policy and speed management plan (visit the Department for Transport website)
  • there is an actual road safety problem

Apply to change/introduce a speed limit

You can complete the application form shown on this page and return to the address shown on the contact details.  Or you can write to us at this address.

What happens next

We will write to you with our decision.  There is a lengthy legal process involved to make the necessary Traffic Regulation Order.  Even if we initially support your request, there is no guarantee that the speed limit will be implemented if objections are raised from other parties such as the police, Parish Council or residents.
