Roads

From November to March, certain roads will be salted when weather forecasts predict icy conditions. A map showing the roads that will be salted in 2008/09 can be downloaded from the right of this page.

Salting takes up to two hours and is normally completed by the start of the working day but delays can occur due to traffic conditions. If rain is forecast salting has to be delayed to stop the salt being washed away.

We aim to allow vehicles to move safely on the roads however snow and ice clearance work is limited by the staff and money available.

Snow

If it snows further salting and ploughing is carried out where needed. Priority is given to the inner and outer ring roads and the roads connecting them.

Footpaths

We also treat priority footpaths, depending on how bad the weather is. This includes areas of the city centre. Please check carefully which footpath sections will be treated as the areas do change from year to year.

Other well used footpaths will be cleared and treated when resources are available. However, most footpaths are unlikely to be treated and pedestrians should take extra care in icy conditions.

Salt bins

The council provides salt bins at varous locations for residents to use on footpaths. The bins are inspected and filled throughout the winter. If you find a bin that needs filling tel: (01904) 551551.

Cycle routes

Off road council cycle routes are treated with grit sand at the beginning of winter and then monitored to see if further treatment is necessary.

Car parks

Car parks are not routinely salted. Entrances and exits are cleared following heavy snow when resources are available.
