Let Des do the driving

World Cup 2010, don't drink and drive, let Des do the driving

Because nobody likes penalties.

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, City of York Council teamed up with the Police and Fire Service to urge people not to drink and drive. Anyone getting together with friends or family to watch the matches was asked to pick a designated driver - a DES - who will stick to soft drinks and drive everyone home safely.

Those caught driving over the limit can expect as a minimum to receive a 12 month ban and up to a £5,000 fine. Even worse, driving with a drink inside you can result in you paying the biggest penalty of your life.

Over the last five years drivers with a drink inside them seriously injured or killed 287 people in York and North Yorkshire. Most people who are caught drink-driving in York give one of the following excuses:

  1. "I've only had a couple, I can't be over the limit. My job depends on it." - Convicted
  2. "Yes, we had a few last night, but we got in a taxi. I'm on my way to work now, it was ages ago. I can't still be over the limit." - Convicted
  3. "I'm a responsible married woman with a good career. I've only had one glass of wine- surely that won't put me over the limit?" - Convicted

Enjoy the game, drink responsibly, don't drink and drive.
