yournextbus

Most buses operating in York are now connected to the Yorkshire region's 'yournextbus' system, providing an easy way for you to receive real-time bus information via on-street displays, text messages and the internet.

On-street displays

Many bus stops in York city centre now have electronic displays showing real-time bus information. Several key stops on routes into York also have real-time displays fitted.

FTR vehicles (as used on route 4) carry internal displays showing the name of the next stopping point along the route.

Using text messaging (SMS) on your mobile phone

Follow these 3 simple steps to get up-to-the-minute bus information on your mobile:

  1. Create a text message
  2. Enter the 8-digit stop number on the bus stop flag (for example, 32900109 is the code for Stonebow Stop D)
  3. Send the text message to 64422 (a charge of 12p plus your standard network SMS rate applies)

You will receive a reply within about 30 seconds which will tell you the route numbers and times of the next bus departures from your stop.

  • If the time is shown in minutes (eg. 3 mins) this is a real-time prediction
  • If the time is shown using 24-hour clock (eg. 15:10) this is a scheduled time.

Scheduled times are shown either when the bus is not fitted with real-time equipment or where the bus has temporarily lost its connection to the real-time system.

'LF', where indicated, means that the next bus will be an accessible Low Floor vehicle.

Using the internet on your smartphone, laptop or home computer

Several web-based services take their information from the Yorkshire real-time system. These will all provide exactly the same information as the yournextbus SMS system, and are free to use (except for your normal internet charges).

  • Our www.yorklive.info site is now online, showing a range of live traffic and transport information in York. For real-time bus information, select 'Bus' and enter your 8-digit stop code or find your local stop on the map (please note that some parts of this site are still in development).
  • Traveline's nextbuses.mobi system provides a national bus information service, incorporating real-time information where available. This service is designed specifically for smartphones, but will also work on any PC or laptop.
  • Metro (West Yorkshire PTE) and Travel South Yorkshire both provide easy-to-use web pages showing real-time bus information across the Yorkshire region. These sites are mainly text-based so are ideal for slower internet connections. You can bookmark one or more bus stop displays in your web browser for regular use.
  • There are also mobile and WAP versions of the Metro site.
