Paying your penalty charge notice

Penalty Charge Notices (PCN) may be either £70 or £50 depending on the seriousness of the parking contravention. For example a PCN that is issued for parking on a yellow line will be at the higher rate of £70, whereas if a pay and display ticket has expired the lower rate of £50 will apply. The PCN will be reduced by a discount of 50% if it is paid not later than the last day of a period of 14 days beginning with the date on which the PCN was served.

A full list of parking contraventions that are enforced in York can be downloaded from the website.

You can pay your parking ticket

  1. Online at https://parking.york.gov.uk/  Please note that you will only be able to pay online after 11am on the next working day after the day on which the PCN was issued.  This is because the PCNs cannot be downloaded onto the computer system until the next day.
  2. In person at the Parking Services office (see contact details on the right hand side of this page). When paying by cash it is important to obtain a receipt in case there is any later query about your payment.
  3. By telephone using debit/credit card on tel: (01904) 551309, 551397, 551396, 551394, or 551310, during office hours of Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. Please have your PCN number and vehicle registration number ready when paying by telephone.
  4. By post. Payments can be made by post using cheques or postal orders. Please do not send cash through the post.  Send your payment together with your completed payment slip (that you can find at the bottom of the PCN) to the Parking Services Office address available on the right hand side of this page. Envelopes without stamps will not be delivered by Royal Mail.  Make cheques and postal orders payable to 'City of York Council'. Write your Vehicle Registration Number, the Penalty Charge Notice Number and your name and address on the back of your cheque or postal order. You will find the Penalty Charge Notice number on the front of the Notice - the number will begin YC.....Post-dated cheques are not accepted.
