New Park & Ride sites

Park and Ride bus

As part of the Access York project three new Park & Ride sites (Askham Bar, Poppleton Bar, Clifton Moor) are proposed to improve the existing service.

Approval was gained to progress the sites in March 2010 however this was suspended by the new government in June 2010.

A new Best and Final Funding Bid for two of the sites (Askham Bar and Poppleton Bar (A59)) was submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT) on 9 September 2011. Alternative ways of delivering the Clifton Moor site are being investigated.

The Department for Transport granted funding for the new Poppleton Bar site and the replacement Askham Bar site on 29 November 2011. Total cost of the project is £21.9m with funding approved on the basis of a 70% DfT and 30% City of York Council split.

The sites have received planning approval subject to conditions. The designs for the sites and associated highway works are now being finalised. Following tendering of the work and final approval by the Department of Transport it is expected that construction will commence in early 2013 with the two sites opening in spring/summer 2014. What this means for York
York's existing Park & Ride is successful and has proven its worth, with 4.3 million passenger boardings per year and the removal of over one million cars from the city centre but there are still potential significant improvements that could add huge value
Askham Bar
A new Park & Ride site is proposed to replace the existing oversubscribed site at Askham Bar
Poppleton Bar (A59)
A new Park & Ride site is proposed to serve the only A-road into York currently without a Park & Ride service
Clifton Moor (B1363)
A new Park and Ride site is proposed to serve Wigginton Road, benefiting users of the B1363 and providing an additional transport link to York Hospital. This site has been excluded from the September 2011 Best and Final Funding Bid. Alternative ways of delivering the Clifton Moor site are being investigated.
