Abandoned vehicles

An abandoned vehicle is one which appears to have been left without lawful authority. It may not have been moved for a long time and be:

  • untaxed
  • in poor condition or vandalised. This could mean it has broken windows, removed tyres or is burnt out.

We do not:

  • remove abandoned vehicles from private land unless requested to do so by the landowner, the police or the fire department
  • remove stolen vehicles or those that have been involved in an accident

Report an abandoned vehicle

Please email your request to ycc@york.gov.uk with the following information:

  • your name, address and contact telephone number
  • location of the vehicle
  • vehicle type (car, van, caravan, motorbike)
  • its condition (good, fired or damaged)
  • whether it is taxed
  • registration number
  • any other information that will help us to resolve your request

You can also report vehicles via phone. Remember to tell us the exact location of the vehicle, the make, the model and registration number.

What we will do

If a vehicle is abandoned we will arrange to get it removed as soon as possible.
