New vision for transport in York

Posted on Tuesday 25 August 2009

York will have a new vision for transport and travel in the city from 2011 onwards if agreed next month.

City of York Council's Executive member for City Strategy will be asked to consider the draft vision for the third Local Transport Plan (LTP3), which sets out the council's aims and objectives for improving transport and travel in York, once the current Local Transport Plan (LTP2) expires in 2011.

As well as addressing specific transport issues, the current round of LTPs must show how transport can help support other initiatives, nationally, regionally and locally. These include:
· Tackling climate change
· Supporting economic growth
· Promoting equality of opportunity
· Contributing to better safety, security and health
· Improving quality of life.

If agreed, York's LTP vision will aim to create a transport system that is;
· Less dominated by motorised transport;
· Adapts to changes in land use to minimise the need for travel;
· Allows people to travel safely and comfortably;
· Supports access to employment, education, training, health and leisure;
· Makes the best use of technology to minimise the impact on air quality.

If agreed, local residents and stakeholders will be consulted on what they feel should be included in the LTP3 later this year, before the creation of a draft LTP3 for further consultation, in summer 2010.
