York celebrates Yorkshire Day

Posted on Wednesday 30 July 2008

Visitors will be able to sample all that Yorkshire has to offer on Friday (1 August) when the centre of York plays host to annual Yorkshire Day celebrations.

Yorkshire Day, which traditionally falls on 1 August, was introduced over 30 years ago by the 'Yorkshire Ridings Society' as a day to celebrate the continuing life of the county within its ancient boundaries and to rejoice in everything Yorkshire has to offer.

York will be joining in with the celebrations with St Sampson's Square playing host to a traditional Yorkshire Market, with produce and products from all over the county from pies and pickles to flat caps. There will be banners, balloons and bunting, plus all sorts of street entertainment.

There will also be a 'booksigning' by Yorkshire author Sarah Barrett, who will be signing copies of her new book about the Haworth based  Bronte Parsonage, which celebrates its 80th anniversary on 4 August.

Also on the Square, the official 'Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity' will be read out at precisely 1pm by members of the Yorkshire Ridings Society.

Paul Barrett, York City Centre manager said: "Yorkshire Day is an opportunity to celebrate all that is great and good about Yorkshire. I hope everyone will come along to St Sampson's Square to join in this special event."
