City of York Council has set out seven aims for the York Cycling City project.
Cycling England announced that York's bid to become a 'Cycling Town*' had been successful this June. The funding allocated to York amounts to £20 per head of population and totals £3.68m over a two and a half year period. The allocation is made on the basis of match funding by the council and stakeholders.
The seven aims are to:
1. Increase total cycling activity - more people cycling more
often
2. Increase cycling amongst low participant groups
3. Address the gaps in connections and cycle routes
4. Improve safety and security
5. Increase bike availability
6. Improve information marketing and awareness
7. To learn, develop and share best practice
Members of the council's Executive Members for City Strategy and Advisory Panel will be asked to approve recommendations to progress plans for the project at a meeting next month (9 September). These include appointing a designated Project Manager - funded by Cycling England - and carrying out consultation with non-cyclists to find out why they choose not to cycle.
* York has been designated a cycling town by Cycling England because of its population size.
