Make your mark in the Big Draw

Posted on Monday 10 September 2007

City of York Council is marking this year's Big Draw event by inviting Community Base, a group for adults with learning difficulties, to create a piece of art that will be displayed at the Hungate site.

Community Base will work with a professional artist to produce work that will be exhibited as part of 'Sitelines', an outdoor exhibition on the development hoardings surrounding the Hungate site, from 19 October.

In addition to this, the council's community arts and festivals team is organising a series of Big Draw events on the theme of window shopping. Community groups, individuals and families will be encouraged to take part in activities, using York's shop windows and fronts as their inspiration. Artists will be on hand to help as many people as possible to get involved.

Ann Bygrave, head of learning disabilities for the council, said: "We are really looking forward to the Big Draw event and it will be great to see Community Base getting involved in these activities."

Vanessa Langford of Arts Action York said: "This year's Big Draw theme, window shopping, will allow people of all ages and abilities to get involved. They can draw local shops or use archive photographs as reference material. Children might be inspired to design shop windows of the future. The Big Draw allows everyone to set their imagination free to explore, create, learn and develop."

The Sitelines exhibition will be on display at Hungate throughout the autumn.

Big Draw is a national initiative set up by the campaign for Drawing, which aims to get everyone drawing and being creative. For the complete programme of Big Draw events go to www.thebigdraw.org.uk
