It wasn't just 16 to 18 year-olds receiving their exam results during the last few weeks - more than 100 people participating in City of York Council's adult education courses also sat GCSE or A Level exams.
Among the subjects studied by adult learners attending local adult education centres were Maths, English, Psychology, Law, Physics and Italian. At GCSE, 80 per cent of adult students achieved grades A*- C whilst at A Level and AS Level 26 per cent of learners achieved A grades.
Would-be adult learners can now enrol on courses for the new academic year
and there are still places available on the following courses:
GCSE - English, Maths, Chemistry, German, Italian and
Psychology.
AS/A2 – English, Italian, Law, Maths and Psychology.
All courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors, and take place at secondary schools at Fulford, Huntington, Clifton and Burnholme.
Anyone interested in enrolling should go to Future Prospects at 24 Swinegate, which is open daily from Tuesday to Saturday between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Alternatively, you can enrol by telephone and arrange to pay by credit card by calling 0800 834239 or 01904 634748. You can also arrange to pay in instalments. People claiming means-tested benefits are able to have their fees waived, providing they provide evidence of this when they enrol.
For those not quite ready for GCSE and A level study, the council's Family Learning and Skills for Life service offers courses that help people to brush up on their basic English and maths. These courses also lead to national qualifications. They are available as taught courses or as ‘drop-in’ sessions at our flexible learning centres in some of the local libraries. They are free and include free child care when they are held during the day. For more information, call 01904 554292.
There are also hundreds of other courses advertised in Learning for Life, the council's brochure on part-time adult education in York. To obtain a copy, visit Future Prospects or download it from the council website by visiting www.york.gov.uk and selecting the ‘Education and learning’ link and then ‘Adult and community education’.
